What makes art “good?” Of course, art is subjective; there is no shame in preferring Picasso’s work over Monet’s, or Led Zeppelin over Elvis Presley. However, it’s undeniable that this subjectivity, to be frank, is only allowed when appreciating art made by White men. Conversely, art and artists who are non-White, feminine, and queer are traditionally considered objectively ‘tacky’ and ‘tasteless’. From this we can establish that, in the words of Natalie Wynn, “taste is pretty intimately related to power.

In Issue Two, we are examining, questioning, and redefining what ‘good taste’ is, and hope that in doing so, we can establish a more authentic understanding of what ‘good art’ can be.

In addition to taste in the context of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ taste, we also want to question what we, as women and non-binary people of color, taste in our lives. Have you tasted safety, comfort, fullness, appreciation, success, love, and care? Conversely, have you tasted abuse, fear, discrimination, brutalization, loss, starvation, and loneliness? How does your identity provide or deprive you of tasting these things? We want to highlight the stories and experiences that give the world a look into what you, the artist, have tasted.

Don’t hold back. Tell your story.
